The most recent offering by Samsung, the Gear 3 Frontier Smartwatch, combines the Samsung Smartwatch iconic design with the latest and smartest technology. If you want a smartwatch that looks like a regular watch with all the latest capabilities, the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier Smartwatch is it.

I’ve had the pleasure of testing out the Gear S3 Frontier for a couple months now and could not be happier at the moment with how it has performed.I have even received several comments about how stylish it looks. But what else does the Samsung Gear S3 have to offer?

Design

Samsung offers two version of the Gear S3 smartwatch, the Gear S3 Frontier and the Gear S3 Classic. While they are similar in size, the Frontier is a shade heavier at 62g to the Classic’s 57g. The real difference is the Frontier smartwatch is geared more toward ruggedness/sports, while the Classic smartwatch is designed for less extensive usage such as home or office applications. Other than that, they are essentially the same watch made for different user personalities or styles. Both versions of the Gear S3 smartwatch have Gorilla Glass for display protection.

Apps and Notifications

Equipped with an always-on watch face, just turn the steel bezel to access apps and notifications. All of your calls, texts, and notifications come can be steamed through the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier Smartwatch through Bluetooth connectivity. It’s Android and iOS compatible. Overall this is a great Samsung smartwatch that could have easily been number one on the best smartwatch list. The only issues I’ve noticed is that the watch activation through the turn of the dial could get bumped and activate the device unintentionally. The other issue is that the Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch is pretty bulky and wearing it as a sleep tracker or in applications where it could get bumped easy could be an issue. Otherwise, it’s hard to imagine more features, apps, and customization in a smartwatch these days.

4. Sony SmartWatch 3– Best Sony Smartwatch

Looking to improve on the 2nd Generation Sony SmartWatch, the Sony SmartWatch 3 ditches the clumsy interface, improves waterproof capability, and adds interchangeable straps. Lets look a little further though.

The Sony SmartWatch 3 utilizes the Android Wear software developed by Google and designed to be used across a wide range of platforms including Sony, Samsung, LG and Motorola devices. Users on Android Wear can create their own widely compatible apps.

Design

With it’s rectangular display, the Sony SmartWatch 3 provides an alternative to popular circular displays like the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier. The seamless watchband connects with the display and gives the appearance of a fitness tracker rather than a typical smartwatch.

Additionally, it has a micro-USB port built into it that allows for a charger to be plugged in. Most other smartwatches in it’s class require a docking station or charging cradle, so the ability to charge by other means is a plus. You can also pop out the display module from the band itself. Several different band color options are available, so just pop the display module back in for a different look.

Display

With a display size of 1.6″, the Sony Smartwatch 3 is the largest display on the best smartwatch list. The colors and brightness actually look quite good, or as good as most of the others in it’s price range. The problem is that the viewing angles are not the best, so if the smartwatch rotates just slightly on your wrist, the display becomes difficult to read.

A host of custom watch faces are available in the Google Play Store allowing users to customize the Sony SmartWatch 3 display to just about anything.

Software

The Sony Smartwatch 3 is equipped with voice commands and allows for you to set timers, schedules, or even check the weather. It’s also compatible with web searches and dictating emails. The voice recognition of the Sony Smartwatch 3 is surprising smoother than many top rated smartwatches in it’s class.

One of the important aspects not found on the Sony Smartwatch 3 is the heart rate monitor. This is a standard feature on almost every smartwatch today, so it’s really the only major downside.

The Sony SmartWatch 3 is newly redesigned, incorporating many improvements over it’s predecessor the Sony SmartWatch 2. However, it’s lack of heart rate monitor and low viewing angles are the major drawbacks. These faults are quickly overshadowed by the affordable price and features of the Sony Smartwatch 3 compared to other top end Smartwatches and why it’s included in the best smartwatch list.

OLED vs. AMOLED vs. LCD

You may be asking yourself what is the difference between all these different types of displays, specifically OLED, AMOLED, and LCD. Lets take a look. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) is made up of liquid crystals that get illuminated by a florescent backlight. LCD displays offer better viewing under direct sunlight and consistent power consumption. The LCD disadvantages tend to be lower quality displays and blacks tend to appear gray. Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) is a thin organic material that emits light when an electrical current is passed through it. OLED’s require lower power consumption and display darker colors. Active Matrix Organic Emitting Diode (AMOLED) is similar to OLED, but offers benefits through TFT technology such as larger displays and faster refresh rates. Motorola’s introduction into the smartwatch market with their first generation Moto 360 smartwatch wasn’t exactly stellar. It could not live up to the high expectations placed on it and it’s new Android Wear OS (iOS Compatible). However, Motorola was well aware of the issues and recently released the new and improved Moto 360 2nd Gen. Lets take a look at what the Moto 360 smartwatch has to offer and why it’s part of the best smartwatch list.

Design

Available in two sizes (42mm and 46mm), the Moto 360 smartwatch is a wearable for both large and small wrists. This is a great optimization feature and if you’ve worn a smartwatch for any length of time you have realized they can be a bit bulky.

Along with the size of the smartwatch, Motorola has increased the available colors as well. The Moto 360 Second Gen. is offered in Gold, Silver, Rose Gold, Black Leather, Black Metal, and Silver & Cognac. This high level of variability is unmatched by other smartwatches in the best smartwatch list.

Display

Building on the Moto 360’s first generation revolutionary round display, the Moto 360 2nd Gen. Smartwatch offers the same with few changes. It’s still a stylish design, but other manufacturers have joined in with similar round displays like the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier.

Motorola has come out strong with the Moto 360 2nd Gen and improved on areas where the Moto360 First Gen fell short. It’s a fast watch and offers some of the most all around customization of any smartwatch in the best smartwatch list.

6. ASUS ZenWatch 3 – Best Smartwatch for the money

When you think ASUS, you may think motherboards or graphics cards, but they also offer some of the best looking smartwatches and the ZenWatch 3 is no exception. But what does it have to offer other than it’s stylish design and why is it included in the best smartwatch list?

Equipped with the latest Android Wear 2.0 software, it removes the need to have your mobile device nearby. Easily connect with Bluetooth, cellular, or Wi-Fi. Tons of Apps have been added and many features improved over Android Wear 1.5.

Display

ASUS ditched the square display used in the previous versions of the ZenWatch and incorporated the circular display for the ZenWatch 3 that can be seen at almost any angle. Colors are impressively bright on the 400 x 400 resolution AMOLED display and ASUS provides over 60 display customization’s currently.

Design

The ASUS ZenWatch 3 has three rather large buttons on the right side of the watch. The top button activates ASUS’s ZenFit app, the middle operates the display dial, and the bottom is Eco mode. Measuring in at 45mm, it’s one of the larger smartwatches on the Best Smartwatch list, so users with smaller hands beware.

Features

The ASUS ZenWatch 3 offers ZenFit which tracks activity through motion. It’s not as exact as other smartwatches with tracking sensors, but it still provides some fitness tracking capabilities such as step, run, walk, sit-up, and pushup tracking. The ASUS Zenwatch 3 is clearly not a fitness tracker and was designed as more of a classic watch in terms of capabilities and appearance.

Other features include Asus Weather, Remote Link and even a flashlight app, which can be installed through the Manager app. Bluetooth compatible, store up to 4GB of music. The Zenwatch 3 is water resistant, so a light rain is fine, just don’t submerge it.

The downsides through are that the ASUS ZenWatch 3 doesn’t support Android Pay (NFC), lacks a GPS, and doesn’t have a heart rate monitor. These features have become standard on the top smartwatches available today, so keep that in mind.

Battery Life

With no GPS, the ASUS ZenWatch 3 doesn’t have to worry about another added feature draining the battery. On average, you can expect a charge to last 2 days and full charging to take a quick 30 minutes (a handy feature).

If you want a watch that runs the latest Android Wear 2.0 and is built around a classic watch design without all the fitness tracking features, then this is the perfect fit. At one time watches were watches (not smartwatches), and maybe that’s still enough with the not as smart ASUS ZenWatch 3.

As with most of the devices reviewed so far in the best smartwatch list, the LG Watch Urbane is a great looking smartwatch with a stylish design. Most people not familiar with the latest smartwatches might mistake the LG Watch Urbane for a high end mechanical device, but does it’s good looks translate into a good smartwatch? Lets find out.

Design

LG offers the Urbane smartwatch in two different stainless steel styles, the shiny silver or shiny gold. If you haven’t noticed, it’s a shiny watch and a real eye catcher. It comes with a leather watch band which leaves a lot to be desired compared to it’s stylish display and housing. The watch band is interchangeable though.

Display

With the 1.3″ P-OLED circular display, the LG Watch Urbane is one of the smallest displays in the best smartwatch list. It’s also the only smartwatch in the review with P-OLED, which isn’t all that different than OLED and should not cause concern as it’s still a very sharp and bright display. It’s lack of an ambient light sensor means that it can not adjust for changing light conditions.

Features

Sporting the ever popular Android Wear, expect the same apps and features that have become the benchmark with Android. This includes the standard host of displays, notification cards, find my phone, and music playback. The LG Watch Urbane is Bluetooth and Wi-Fi compatible.

The LG Watch Urbane has a mic for voice recognition and it’s Snapdragon 400 processor is fast and capable.

Fitness tracking features for the LG Watch Urbane are not as abundant as the top of the line Fitness Trackers such as the FitBit Surge Superwatch, but it does offer some basic options in the fitness tracking department. Equipped with an optical heart rate sensor located on the back, it syncs with and utilizes the LG Pulse App.

Battery Life

Battery life for the Urbane smartwatch is about what you would expect for top smartwatches, close to 2 days. However, heavy use has shown that 1-1.5 days is more realistic. The LG Urbane utilizes a charging station as opposed to a direct Miro-USB connection, so if you must have a power cable look elsewhere.

Ultimately, the LG Watch Urbane is a smartwatch that looks better than most other devices, but offers fewer features. It’s IP67 rating means it’s water resistant and can take rain, snow, and showers, but with the leather band it may be best to limit it’s exposure to water.

Samsung Pay vs. Android Pay vs. Apple Pay

The smart pay feature available with most smartwatches is a pretty handy feature for people who don’t like to carry a wallet or purse and just like the simplicity of paying with a swipe of the wrist. But what’s the difference between the top three smart pay programs? The two technologies used for smart pay are near-field communication (NFC) and magnetic secure transfer (MST). NFC is a special chip in the smartwatch that allows the watch to communicate with NFC enabled payment terminals. MST is the same magnetic scanning technology that regular credit cards use and is more widely accepted. Samsung Pay offers both payment options in their smartwatches. Apple Pay uses only NFC technology, restricting the amount of retailers that might accept it. Android Pay offer only NFC as well, restricting it’s use similar to Apple Pay. Clearly, Samsung Pay offers the wider selection of available outlets that will accept payment through your smartwatch.

The latest offering from the Chinese manufacturer Huawei within the past few weeks is the Huawei Watch 2 with 4G capability. Looking to improve on the success of the Huawei Watch 1 with added features and capabilities, is it enough to really make a difference or is it just the same Huawei Watch re-branded? Lets take a look.

Design

The Huawei Watch 2 is available in two styles, the Huawei Watch 2 Classic for business or casual outings, and the regular Huawei Watch 2 that is more rugged and designed for outdoors and fitness type applications. This is very similar scenario to the Gear S3 Frontier and S3 Classic variations offered by Samsung. With 9 wristband styles to choose from, hundreds of custom watch faces, and a rugged or classic version, the customization of the Huawei Watch 2 is among the best.

The Huawei Watch 2 still sports the classic large round display and ceramic bevel. The bevel alone is touted as taking 288 hours to make and 6 times harder than stainless steel if you can believe it. It sounds like Huawei is really getting behind providing a rugged smartwatch. The 4G capable nano sim slot is located discreetly in in the bevel itself which proves a great out of the way location.

It’s 1.2″ screen is slightly smaller than the Original 1.4″ display, but with the bevel appears just the same or larger. Equipped with two outer buttons, the top button allows you to go back and the bottom allows you to access the fitness options.

The Huawei Watch 2 is IP68 Water and Dust resistant so it can be be taken into the shower, withstand a rainstorm, or be used for swimming.

Features

As with other Huawei Smartwatches, the Huawei 2 uses Android Wear. So you’ll get all the goodies associated with Android Wear coupled with the Huawei Watch 2’s GPS, NFC payment, and 4G speed capabilities. All this with around a 2 day battery life which is pretty good among it’s competitors.

You’ll be able to make and receive phone calls without your mobile device with the Huawei Watch 2 integrated antenna (eSIM/SIM), listen to music, and have Bluetooth capability. The Huawei Watch 2 comes with it’s own fitness tracking app or you can use one of the many available on Android Wear. Fitness features on the Huawei Watch 2 include:

But it’s refreshing to see Huawei bringing improved products to the market like the Huawei Watch 2 that offers a lot of customization, 4G capability, improved fitness tracking, and a rugged design for outdoor applications. The Huawei Watch 2 is the top 4G LTE Smartwatch in the best smartwatch list.

9. Huawei Watch – Best Budget Smartwatch

Huawei is not exactly the most well known brand around, but they do make some fine looking smartwatches. Lets take and look at what the Huawei Smartwatch has to offer and why it’s included in the best smartwatch list.

Design

The first thing you notice with the Huawei Watch is the large 1.4″ 400 x 400 AMOLED display. It’s constructed of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass (second in hardness to diamonds) and similar to what is on the Apple Watch. Scratch resistance is always a concern with these large screens and how exposed they are, so unless something catastrophic happens, it should absorb every day wear and tear with no issues.

The Huawei Watch comes in an astonishing 10 different display and band combinations, including Stainless Steel, Gold, and Jewel Pearl.

With a 10,000:1 contrast ratio, the colors and brightness on the Huawei Watch are pretty outstanding. The always on display features about 60 per-loaded watch face designs along with the 100’s available on Google Play.

Features

As with so many smartwatches in the best smartwatch list, the Huawei Watch runs on Android 2.0. Expect all the goodies that come with it including the Google Fit app. There is no GPS on the Huawei Watch so don’t expect navigation features, but you also won’t have GPS exhausting the battery more quickly.

It’s equipped with an optical heart rate tracker, but it’s accuracy leaves a lot of be desired. It’s best to treat the fitness features that the Huawei Watch provides as a novelty. Get a dedicated fitness tracker like the Garmin Forerunner 735 XT if activity tracking is your primary concern.

Battery Life

The hardware of the Huawei Watch is pretty standard featuring the 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor, 4 GB Storage, 512 MB Ram, and IP67 rating (dust and rain resistant).

Battery life typically lasts 1.5 days and the lack of GPS really helps increase battery life.

The Huawei Watch is stylish with a great display sure to make a statement. It lacks some features found in other top smartwatches in the best smartwatch list, such as the lack of GPS and fitness tracking capabilities, but makes up for it with looks and customization ability.

Equipped with the iconic square display, you either love or hate the look of the Apple Watch. Regardless though, it’s easy to see the Apple quality is there in both design and build. Available in both the 38 mm or 42 mm (larger battery in 42 mm version), it’s surprisingly less bulkier than similar sized smartwatches.

Unlike specialty smartwatches or dedicated fitness trackers, the Apple Watch pretty much does it all. Make calls, reply to messages, track activity and heart rate, and so much more through Apple Watch Apps.

With Apple’s Taptic engine, different notifications give off different feels. Notifications feel like taps and certain Apps give off more of a buzz. They all combine to provide a more complete user experience.

The Apple Watch offers just enough fitness and activity tracking to make it dangerous. While not as immersed as some of the top fitness trackers such as the Fitbit Surge, it does offer caloric burn measurements through the Activity app.

The largest downsides however are the lack of GPS and no sleep tracking ability, something that has become standard on the top smartwatches today.
