ABOUT THE COMPANY – ANFASA
ANFASA (Academic Non-Fiction Authors’ Association of South Africa) was launched in 2004 with the goal of providing a voice for the concerns and interests of academic and non-fiction authors. The organisations’ slogan is “dedicated to empowering authors” and their main aim is to uplift South African academic and non-fiction authors by drawing attention to their works and ensuring protection of their rights across the book value chain.
ABOUT THE BURSARY GRANT SCHEME
The ANFASA Grant Scheme for Authors (AGSA) is a grant for student authors who are currently researching or writing pieces. The grant value is approximately R25 000 and can be used by the author to travel for research purposes or take leave from employment to work on their manuscript.
Successful candidates will be announced within December – should you not receive any feedback by then, please regard your application as unsuccessful.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- Author currently working on a non-fiction piece (general or scholarly)
- New authors are welcome to apply – applications are open to books written in any of the official languages
- ANFASA member (if you are not a member, you can join by visiting and submitting the membership form with your application form)
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE BURSARY
Applications must be done in one of the following ways:

(Insert the words “AGSA ANFASA Grant Scheme – Your Full Name” in the email subject line).
If you are applying via email, you will need to provide the following information:
- Personal information (full name, title, gender, date of birth, landline contact number, cellphone number, email address)
- Employment information if applicable (profession, company of employment)
- ANFASA membership (are you a paid-up member)
- The title/ provisional title of your book
- A short description/ summary of your book which you are working on (+- 500 words)
- Your motivation for writing this book
- Your target audience/ readership
- Dates (when you started writing this book and when you expect to finish)
- Publisher details (if you have approached a publisher for this book – if you have not approached a publisher, how do you see your book being published and distributed)
- List of your published books if applicable
- Are you applying for funding to cover research/ writing or both
- How much funding are you applying for and how you intend on spending it (the maximum grant value is R25 000)
- Details of other funding (if you have applied for/ been promised/ received funding from another source, provide details of this)
- Any further information/ motivation which may be favourable for your application
